As such it cannot be copyrighted, it is in the public domain. The song as copyrighted by Simon and Garfunkel includes the song canticle which was clearly written by Art Garfunkel.
While one Martin Carthy did teach Paul Simon the song, Carthy could not have copyrighted it either. The only thing that is copyrightable about it is the particular expression of the song! As Simon and Garfunkel did it, it is indeed theirs and copyrightable as Sorry were late I was being a little shit shirt. Carthy was miffed because he thought some reference should have been made that it was a "traditional folk song.
